Words By Mirza Ghalib
... with english translation

Ki wafaa hamm se tho ghair issko jafaa kehtay hain
hotee aaee hai acchon ko burra kehtay hain
Care not if they called you "cruel"
- when infact you were being kind.
Mistaking good for evil
has often suited mankind
Aaj hamm apni pareshani-e khaatir unn se
kehne jaate tho hain parr dekhiye kyaa kehtay hain
In a trepid mood I enter her court
with the tale of my smitten heart
I fear if I will be tongue-tied
or my sad tale she'll abide
Aglay waqton ke hai ye loag, inhein kuchh na kaho
jo mae-o-naghma ko andoh-rubaa kehtay hain
It's a cliche rife that wine and song
are cure for the sorrows of life
These are at best a transient cure
whose comfort will not endure
Hai paray sarhad-e-idraak se apna masjood
qiblay ko ahle-nazarr qiblaa-numaa kehtay hain
My prayer the world cannot divine
it shuns all symbols and shrines
I know the road that leads to Thee
- while these are at best road-signs
Paa-e afgaar pe jabb se tujhe rahm aaya hai
khaar-e raah ko tere hamm mehr-giyaa kehtay hain
When my wounds evoke Thy pity divine
as I tread this thorn-riddle road
I call the thorns a magic herb
which brings me favours Thine
Dekhiay laati hai uss shokh ki nakwat kyaa rangg
uss ki harr baat pe hamm naam-e Khudaa kehtay hain
Her charm and well earned vanity
are sure to read new peaks! -
if we must sing God's glory
o'er each word that she speaks
